What is personal responsibility?

Personally responsible graduates will demonstrate the ability to navigate challenging situations, display an understanding of personal and career-relevant finance, strive to expand knowledge base and/or express resilience in problem-solving.

Developing Personal Responsibility
Examples could include:

  • Exhibits tenacity, adaptability and persistence
    • Completing Challenging Coursework: Enrolling in rigorous academic courses or programs that push students’ intellectual boundaries requires them to persevere through difficult assignments, exams and projects, demonstrating their resilience and commitment to academic excellence.
    • Leadership Roles: Taking on leadership positions in part-time jobs, group projects or student organizations requires students to navigate challenges, manage conflicts and remain adaptable.
  • Demonstrates financial literacy
    • Personal Budgeting: Students can demonstrate financial literacy by budgeting and managing their personal finances wisely. Making smart decisions about saving, investing and spending helps students develop essential skills for managing their resources effectively and making sound financial decisions throughout their lives.
    • Financial Education: Students can develop their financial literacy skills by participating in financial education programs, where they learn about topics such as budgeting, saving, investing and managing debt, equipping them with the knowledge and tools to make informed financial decisions.
  • Carries a commitment to continuous learning
    • Micro-Credentials or Certifications: Students can enroll in micro-credentialing programs or pursue professional certifications to gain specialized skills and credentials recognized by employers in their industry.
    • Online Learning Platforms: By providing access to diverse courses, resources and interactive tools, these platforms allow students to explore new interests, deepen their knowledge and cultivate a lifelong commitment to continuous learning.
  • Handles ambiguity with dexterity and creativity
    • Group Assignments: Collaborating with peers offers students the opportunity to develop teamwork and encourages innovative problem-solving to ensure the successful completion of the project.
    • Applied Learning: Student use the information learned through their coursework and co-curricular experiences to apply to real world situations, enabling students to navigate uncertain situations with confidence, find creative solutions to challenges and thrive in dynamic environments.
